  • Title: Enhancing Modern Nursing Practices for Patient and Hospital Experiences: Insights from Student Nurses

Abstract

Student nurses receive structured instruction with well-defined objectives, such as planning for pandemics like COVID-19. Upon completing this training, they will be equipped to contribute to advancing healthcare through innovative thinking and research. According to the Nursing Act of 2005, they must adhere to strict guidelines and fulfill training requirements, including proving they possess the necessary professional knowledge, abilities, and interpersonal skills.

Nevertheless, despite a wealth of studies, there remains a gap in our understanding of student nurses' readiness to provide high-quality nursing care, enhance their professional status, and have positive patient and hospital experiences. We require fresh approaches and modifications to close this gap and improve nursing education. The purpose of the paper is to discuss student nurses' experiences working in hospitals and share their experiences while preparing to provide excellent nursing care to patients. Two public nursing schools—one in an urban location and the other in a rural one—hosted the study in South Africa.

The study used a method where they described things and explored them to understand how ready student nurses are to improve patient health and their experiences in hospitals. Permission was received from the University of South Africa Research Ethics Committee (CREC), and approval was obtained from other important people and the nursing schools involved. Students in their third and fourth years of nursing school were purposefully selected from two nursing schools until saturation when there were 27 participants. The researcher obtained the data between March and April of 2021. Before being interviewed, participants must sign a consent and confidentiality agreement for the focus group talks. The researcher arranged two group conversations at each school, collecting notes in the field and ensuring that everyone agreed to audio recordings.

A descriptive analysis was carried out, with the supervisor acting as a co-coder to ensure theme coherence and relevance. The ATLAS. Ti program was utilized to investigate the findings further. These data were utilized to develop a paradigm for training student nurses to improve patient health and hospital experiences while prioritizing medical safety. The study followed ethical rules to protect individuals and ensure scientific integrity through dependable procedures. The study emphasized emotional maturity and its impact on behavior, emphasizing its importance in handling social situations and ensuring professional fit. Student nurses prioritized emotional resilience, interpersonal skills, goal setting, and self-reflection to manage challenging conditions, emphasizing the importance of behavior in overcoming these challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted nursing training standards, particularly students' development, as per SGD-target 4 and the Nursing Act of 2005. The study emphasizes the significance of creating a model to enhance the quality of nursing education for student nurses to prepare for global pandemics. The research aimed to enhance nursing education by focusing on emotional maturity and behavioral influences, preparing student nurses for practice. Educators can incorporate discussions on these topics during onboarding and introduce online courses. Preceptors should utilize online resources and counseling services to foster innovation and help students develop emotional maturity and decision-making skills. Future research should explore the impact of collaboration among student nurses across various fields on patient care during global pandemics, promoting resilience and competence for future health crises.
