Abstract

Abstract Introduction:
Sleep is a vital component of growth, cognitive development, and emotional regulation in childhood and adolescence. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep has been linked to learning difficulties, mood instability, anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. Despite its importance, healthy sleep habits are frequently overlooked due to factors such as excessive screen time, academic pressure, early school schedules, and diminished parental supervision.
Objectives:
To highlight the importance of sleep as a determinant of mental health in children and adolescents and to emphasize the role of nursing in promoting healthy sleep behaviors as part of holistic mental health promotion strategies.
Methods:
A narrative synthesis of current evidence was conducted, focusing on the relationship between sleep and mental health in young populations, and on the contribution of nursing interventions in promoting sleep health literacy and behavioral change within families, schools, and communities.
Results:
The evidence supports that adequate sleep duration and quality are protective factors for emotional stability, academic performance, and social functioning. Nursing-led interventions, such as sleep hygiene education, early screening for sleep disturbances, and school-based programs, demonstrate positive effects on sleep behavior and psychological well-being.
Conclusion:
Promoting healthy sleep is a powerful strategy for improving mental health and well- being among children and adolescents. Nurses are uniquely positioned to lead this effort through education, advocacy, research, and community engagement. “Shaping the future” of child and adolescent health requires recognizing sleep not only as a biological need but as a cornerstone of mental health promotion.
