  • Title: Preventing Medication Errors in Clinical Practice: A Gaming Approach

Abstract

During our nursing training students are taught the basic premise to administer medications safely in clinical settings during our training and yet “medication errors” keep happening in clinical practice. Questions to consider as these errors continue to happen despite best practice identifying the 10 Rights of Medication Administration. So, if everyone has been trained in these basic rights, then why do they keep happening? Using an evidence-based practice approach, the concept of medication administration versus “medication errors” will be reviewed. A gaming approach will be used that includes scenarios to help identify best practice going forward to minimize the reoccurrence of “medication errors” in various clinical practice settings. Focusing on the 10 Rights of Medication Administration has not lessened the reality of occurrence of medication errors. It is time that we focus on best practices so that we can improve delivery of healthcare and minimize medication errors in the present rather than the future Let the games begin!
