  • Title: Improving Resilience and Remission in Depression and Anxiety

Abstract

Nurses are at the front lines of mental health care for the population, often embracing holistic therapies that go beyond just medicinal intervention. Considering our current dire mental health landscape and the increasing communal struggle with existential dread, holistic therapies offer the nurse a way to improve client outlook and reduce anxiety and depression while improving resilience. Mindfulness and acceptance therapies have been shown to improve resilience, reduce negative rumination, and improve somatic presentations for mental health clients with a variety of diagnoses. Research suggests that teaching individuals to approach present-moment experiences with acceptance and equanimity, rather than just awareness, is essential for building stress resilience and improve long-term outcomes. Understanding principles and evidence-based techniques of mindfulness and acceptance therapies can assist the practicing nurse in mediating anxiety and depression for their clients, improving social outlook, and leading to improved outcomes for both the individual and community.
